Systemates’ Projectmates software lets owners manage the complete lifecycle of a building.

While the construction industry has seen robust growth in recent years, it is still known as a laggard in one key area: state of the art technology. According to some industry surveys, some construction firms are using paper-based processes that can be described as archaic. It appears the image of project managers running around with documents rolled up in tubes is not a cliché, but a fact of life.

Systemates Inc., on the other hand, has already begun to take aim at modernizing the industry with its Projectmates software, a sophisticated, cloud-based construction program management platform. Nicole Countryman, director of sales for Projectmates, notes that Systemates was started by those with major experience in the building industry. “Systemates was founded in 1995 by two AIA-certified architects,” Countryman says. “Once the Internet became popular, we started using that as a platform and eventually launched Projectmates 1.0 in 2000.”

 Sweet Construction celebrates its 105th anniversary this year, and given its impressive list of clientele, it looks to be headed for another century of success. Founded in 1912, the company was incorporated in New York in 1952 by Marvin Sweet, who held the reins of the company until he retired in 2001. That’s when Steve Alessio took over. Alessio had joined the firm in 1980 as an intern, fresh out of architecture school.

Vanguard Modular Building Systems LLC is changing the way its clients think about modular construction, one project at a time.

“We go after projects that may not have been thought of as being appropriate for modular methods in the past,” says Mark Meyers, vice president of marketing services for the Malvern, Pa.-based company. “We are finding that architects, general contractors and owners are beginning to recognize the benefits of modular construction.”

Established in 1998, Vanguard Modular specializes in providing permanent and temporary modular buildings to the education, commercial, healthcare, oil and gas, government and religious markets. The company’s typical projects range from 700 to 20,000 square feet in size; the largest building the company has completed is a three-story, 40,000-square-foot facility.

“We do not supply 8-foot and 10-foot wide construction trailers; we construct large modular buildings,” Meyers says. “We focus our resources and time on custom building solutions instead of getting into the trailer industry, which we view as a distraction.”

The resiliency, portability and manufacturability of the shipping container have long made it the backbone of the transportation and logistics worlds. For Marengo Structures co-founder Christian Salvati, these qualities also make shipping containers an ideal option for environmentally minded homeowners and communities.

“Shipping containers have an extremely strong structure of corten steel, which is traditionally used to build bridges, overpasses and ships,” he says. “Corten steel is prohibitively expensive to recycle, consequently unused shipping containers are piling up in our ports. Our process enables them to be  up-cycled for use as sustainable buildings.”

New York’s largest-ever bridge project is on track for a successful completion after years of gestation.

For more than 10 years, the replacement of New York’s longest bridge seemed to be little more than a distant dream. That dream is now moving swiftly toward becoming a reality.

Villa Construction Inc. has become the go-to contractor for architectural concrete in the New York City tri-state area of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut. The company specializes in cast-in-place concrete that is used for the exterior or interior ornamentation or finish of a building. “That’s our forte,” says Italo DiNunzio, chief estimator and project executive. “We have done many very unique projects.”

The Hawthorne, N.Y.-based concrete contractor was founded in 1984 by Antonio Dellorso and has remained focused on providing excellent service and exceptional craftsmanship. From pouring a foundation to the most complex water pollution facilities, Villa Construction says it has successfully completed every project to the satisfaction of its clients.

Villa Construction employs eight people in its office and an average of 50 to 60 people in the field, but has ranged to as many as 125 depending on the projects. “We have skilled carpenters whom are men we highly depend on to put the formwork up,” DiNunzio says. “Our labor force consists of union members. They are men who stick with us for many, many years and develop their skills on the job.”

For C3D Architecture PLLC, the 232 7th Avenue project is more than just a mere structure. “This whole building works like an organism,” Principal Damir Dan Sehic says. “It has its own bones, skin and systems which have to work as a whole, very similar to human bodies.”
