The Collavino Group has several advantages in the competitive Northeast market, starting with its diversity. The organization consists of three major companies: PCR Contractors, a general contracting, construction management and design/build firm with a strategic focus on the Ontario market; Collavino Construction Co., a general contractor specializing in heavy civil contracts, as well as a prime subcontractor for large cast-in-place projects with an international project scope; and International Precast Solutions (IPS), a Detroit-based structural and architectural precast manufacturer catering to both Canada and the United States.

When a job requires a fast-track schedule, it always helps if there is familiarity between the owner and the contractor. Fortunately, this was the case for the Little Rock, Ark.-based CDI Contractors LLC, which has worked with MG Herring Group for several years before signing on to build The Village at Fairview retail lifestyle center. “We have a good working relationship with the owner as far as trust and looking out for their best interest,” Senior Project Manager Tommy Weed says.

In the structural engineering industry, Cary Kopczynski & Company Inc. (CKC), based in Bellevue, Wash., is known as an innovator and pioneer. “We built the company around a philosophy that we believed was unique, and time has proven that to be the case,” President and CEO Cary Kopczynski says. “In addition to providing state-of-the-art structural engineering services, we also provide what’s known as ‘buildable design.’

The island of Guam has a long history with the U.S. military that dates back to World War II. So does Black Construction Corp., the largest construction company in the western Pacific Ocean. “Black Construction has been here for 52 years,” declares Leonard Kaae, senior vice president and general manager. “We started in June 1958 on a joint venture to construct 1,000 houses for the U.S. Air Force and have remained here on Guam since then. So we have a long history of building not only military projects but also other projects for the government of Guam and private projects for owners.”

A year of preconstruction resulted in savings in the design and construction of a 14-story building that is part of the 32-acre North Bethesda Center office park. “Turner performed budget analysis and value-engineering throughout the preconstruction process,” Project Manager Steve Michalak points out. “One of the features that was value-engineered was the exterior wall of the building. The wall used to be a more expensive glass curtain wall. By changing it to a combination of precast and ribbon and punch windows, substantial savings were achieved.”

With a customer list that includes General Electric, the Archdiocese of New York, British Airways, Columbia University, Macy’s, Mount Sinai Medical Center and the United Nations, Trystate Mechanical Inc. is proud to stand behind its work. As a full-service HVAC contractor, Trystate says it has the experience and ability to construct a wide variety of projects, as either a subcontractor or as the mechanical prime contractor.

A successful retail center design creates an inviting atmosphere without overpowering the many brands that will be competing for consumers’ attention. When building a large facility, some contractors might be tempted to subcontract portions such as the concrete work. But that is not the case for Okland Construction as it builds the new Utah Valley Convention Center in Provo, Utah. Project Manager John Cockrell says Okland can better manage the project by doing the concrete on its own. “It is one of the first activities that takes place,” he says. “We can help control the schedule and the quality of the concrete work.”
